Herzog-August Bibliothek (Herzog-August Library)

Yesterday I went to Wolfenbüttel, a small kind of suburb of Braunschweig to visit one of my neighbors and friends Ute at work.  She works at the Herzog-August Bibliothek, one of the most famous collections of books from the middle ages.  After some awesome Chinese food for lunch, she took me on a private tour of the current exhibit.

The books are first sorted by subject, and then by size to maximize the space in the small building.

A multi-lingual Bible, including Hebrew, Latin, Greek, Aramaic, and German

A Gutenberg Bible

The first Bible written in German

These books were locked inside a huge vault and were truly amazing things to see.  They are all pre- 1500.

Tomorrow I am off to Berlin until the end of next week for the German National Fulbright Conference!
