We rented a small apartment in a boarding house for the night nearby and enjoyed our view of the Croatian countryside. The next morning we drove to a small town called Split on the Dalmatian Coast. It looked like a combination of Greece and Italy. There we saw Diocletian's palace, our first glimpse of the sea, and we walked around a really cool market. We had lunch at a local restaurant and all had fresh seafood. The one problem I had with my lunch, was that I the prawns in my risotto weren't peeled. I kind of had to stick my hands into my risotto and peel them all before I could even start eating!
After Split, we drove to Dubrovnik, which is in southern Croatia. We did not know that we would have to drive through Bosnia for about 20 minutes though, and were kind of confused when we got to the border control. Don't worry, they let us through with no problems. Dubrovnik is known as the "pearl of the Adriatic" and it was amazing. The old town had city walls around it that you could walk and really take in some awesome views of the city. We walked around inside the city and then decided to take a ferry to a small island nearby called Locrum. After a little hike to the fortress ruins on the top of the island, and back to the abandoned monastery below, we were hot, sweaty, and needed to go for a swim. Jumping off the cliffs into the Adriatic Sea = one of the most memorable experiences of my life.
